Description

Those taking this course will be taught clinical skills for motility testing, pupil testing, anterior chamber evaluation, and tonometry testing. This course is intended for beginning and intermediate levels.

Please note: This course is in power point format and is best viewed on a PC. Mac users may not be able to experience all of the slide simulations. You will need an updated power point viewer to view this course. You may download a free power point viewer using the link on our homepage.

After completing this section the student should be able to do the following:

  • Identify structures in the anterior chamber
  • Describe how to use the slit lamp to evaluate anterior chamber depth
  • Identify cell on slit lamp exam
  • Identify flare on slit lamp exam
  • List the steps to the cover/uncover test
  • Define eso, exo, phoria, tropia, hyper, ortho
  • Describe how to document motility deviations using E, ET, X, XT, HT
  • Identify ortho motility on cover uncover test simulation
  • Identify Esophoria on cover uncover test simulation
  • Identify Esotropia on cover uncover test simulation
  • Identify Exophoria on cover uncover test simulation
  • Identify Exotropia on cover uncover test simulation
  • Identify Hyper deviations on cover uncover test simulation
  • Describe how to perform the cross cover test
  • Identify what different eye movements on the cross cover test indicate
  • Identify Ortho, Eso, Exo, and hyper deviations from cross cover simulations
  • Identify how to hold the prism for measuring eso, exo, and hyper deviations on cross cover testing
  • Identify proper endpoint for measuring deviations on cross cover testing simulations
  • List methods for intraocular pressure measurement
  • Identify pressure readings on the Goldmann applanation tonometer dial
  • Identify factors that affect intraocular pressure readings
  • Describe the correct appearance of the mires on Goldmann applanation tonometry testing
  • Describe how to move the Goldmann applanation tonometer according to the placement of the mires
  • Describe the technique used to measure intraocular pressure by tonopen
  • Describe the technique used to measure intraocular pressure by Schiotz
  • Describe how to evaluate pupils
  • Describe the swinging flashlight test
  • Define afferent pupillary defect and relative afferent pupillary defect
  • Identify normal pupil reaction on simulation of swinging flashlight test
  • Identify hippus pupil reaction on simulation of swinging flashlight test
  • Identify APD pupil reaction on simulation of swinging flashlight test

This course should take approximately 3 hours to complete.

This course has been approved by the AOA Commission on Paraoptometric Certification (CPC) for continuing education credit for use toward paraoptometric certification renewal.
